A tour bus crash during a cruise ship excursion killed two people and injured 16 others, two of which are critically injured. The incident occurred on Dec. 6 in Tortola, an island in the British Virgin Islands, and involved Celebrity Summit cruise line passengers.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., the parent company of Celebrity Summit said on Twitter that the Summit’s captain was at the local hospital visiting injured passengers.

The excursion bus had apparently lost control on a steep and wet road, but no further details were provided.

A statement released by Celebrity Cruises revealed the following: “The bus was independently operated, and not part of any Celebrity-sponsored shore excursion. We will refer questions about the accident and its investigation to local authorities.”

This is not the first time Celebrity Cruise passengers have been injured. In 2009, Celebrity Summit passengers sustained serious injuries when an open-air excursion vehicle veered off the roadway in Dominica.
